So I knew a while back that Ben Kweller was in the process of recording a new album. I kinda lost touch with news surrounding him. Today I read an article about the review of his new EP, How Ya Lookin' Southbound? Comein... with tracks that will appear on his new album (yet to be released, obviously). Anyways, I got my hands on it and it has been on repeat since. I burned it to cd for the ride back to my hometown tonight.
I cannot begin to tell you how intoxicating the new material is. It has me absolutely overjoyed and ecstatic.
My favorite song from the EP is by far The Biggest Flower. I enjoyed the music so much that I personally transcribed the lyrics to the song because they aren't online anywhere. The song gives me chills and makes me so damn happy. It's nice to finally have some new material from him that doesn't make me sad. A lot of his older music brings me back to times that usually just bring sadness back. I listened to a lot of his music with someone and it makes me sad. Well, at first when I hear some of the old music I am extremely happy, but that leads to bittersweet memories. Yes, I know that sounds really gay. But that word, bittersweet, is the closest word available to convey my feelings and frustration.
Did I mention the EP includes two little clips Mr. Kweller recorded himself early on, before they were actually songs? Yes. He did that. And yes, it is a glorious insight into the genius that is the man known as Ben Kweller.

As I said, I transcribed the lyrics to Ben Kweller The Biggest Flower:
out on the road
a heavy handed sun
was doing what its told
to shine on everyone
and in the darkest cloud
i started all the rain
i flooded us with water
i flooded us with paini never ever wanted to see it
i never ever wanted to see it
when the world was changingpaper boats
sailing down your street
fresh water goldfish swimming at your feet
all the rains water and all the rains pain
couldn't put the sunshine in the world againi never ever wanted to see it
i never ever wanted to see it
when the world was changingmy town was a lake
when it sprung the biggest flower
stopping all the sadness and opening the drain
i dont wish the answers on you or your friends
they just make you wanna do everything againoh i never ever wanted to see it
i never ever wanted to see it
i never ever wanted to see it
i never ever wanted to see it
the world is always changing
I also decided to upload the song for your listening pleasure. I want you to hear this. It is amazing. I also uploaded another song from the EP titled Somehow (Singlemalt Version). They're at the bottom of this entry.
But before you download them, please promise to me that at the very least, you will make an attempt to see this man live? I have seen his talent twice. The first time I was beyond Wasted & Ready (as he as most famously known for). The second time I saw him was amazing because I actually remembered it and didn't black out. So yes, please visit the mans site BenKweller.com and check out when he's going to be around again, maybe buy the EP (or another album, even a shirt?), and learn about the man. You can also check out the picture of his young son (its probably the coolest picture I've seen in a long time).
I hope you all feel the way I do about this man and his music. I know I have spread my influence on a great many and that I am the reason why they listen to him. So if you are one of those people, listen to this too. I promise you'll like it and you just might find a renewed happiness in this mans music, just as I have.
As my second promise, here are the links to the .mp3's of two songs. Right click "Save As" (or something along those lines). It's better to right click than to left click. Here they are:
Thanks. I hope you like it as much as I do.
